Virtual Journey: Biomass and Bioenergy

A third virtual study tour was organized on November 11, 2021, which aimed to facilitate the exchange between executives from the Algerian Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies (MTEER), the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM), the German Ministry of Economy and Energy (BMWi), the Algerian Commission for Electricity and Gas Regulation (CREG), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the German Energy Agency (DENA) on the governance of renewable energy with a focus on Biomass.

The main objective of the event was to present an overview of the German bioenergy market and to address issues relevant to the Algerian market. DENA experts presented the regulatory framework for bioenergy and biomass in Germany.

The participants in this virtual trip exchanged with DENA experts as well as representatives of the above mentioned institutions on the opportunity to develop biomass as an energy source in collaboration with German companies present in Algeria.

To learn more about the practice, a representative of the Berlin Municipal Cleaning Agency (BSR) presented the company's experience and good practices applied in the biogas plant in the Berlin district of Ruhleben. Finally, the participants in this trip also benefited from a presentation of the experience of the use of bioenergy in the sugar refinery in Anklam, a small town located in the north-east of Germany.
